Cake Crumbs - with Jade Bockel from Melbourne Cookie Company
How did your baking journey begin?
My baking journey began when I was planning my 10th birthday party. My dad bought me a kids party planning book and we used a template from that to made a flower cake. I always loved baking from then on and it was in my early 20’s I started watching youtube and craftsy classes and from there I was hooked!
2. As a cake/cookie decorator, what do you feel are the benefits of using edible images?
On cakes they are a massive time saver! Time is money and you can use them to create something that would take far longer by hand. With cookies it lets you brand an edible product and there is a demand for branded items.
3. What’s your favourite type of cake/cookie to create?
Drip cakes! I love how they come together and the variety of items you can put on them. I do have a soft spot for unicorn cakes but drip cakes are more universal.
4. What’s the strangest/funniest cake/cookie you’ve been asked to make?
Honestly probably the cakes my nephews ask for! This year one of my nephews wanted a zombie robot with a sword hanging out of its chest with him on the end of the sword! Needless to say he got a zombie robot minus the sword!
5. What’s your best tip for wanna be cake makers/decorators/cookie makers?
Don’t be discouraged if things go wrong! That’s how you learn. Join cake decorating groups on Facebook they are full of info and the people on there are a great resource for learning.
6. What is your all time favourite cake/cookie making tool?
There are so many! I can’t pick one! Agbay for cutting cakes, impression mats and 3D printed stamps for cookies and edible printer and silhouette cameo for both!
7. Do you have any tips you can share when either printing or applying edible images?
There are so many that you learn along the way but my top tips are : Use a thin layer of shortening to place edible images on cakes you can move them easily that way and you won’t ruin your image. Always have spare sheets of edible image, having just enough for something jinxes it I think. Make sure when you are packaging edible image cookies you have given them ample time to dry. This prevents colour bleed and sticking.
8. What is your career highlight to date?
My career highlight was definitely starting work at Melbourne Cookie Co and getting to tell people that I decorate cookies for a living!
