Stunning doesn't quite capture the sheer artistry that defines Yuanita Gondoerjo's creations at SweetSavory. Yuanita is the creative genius behind SweetSavory's breathtaking cakes, with her husband managing the business side of things. Looks like they make a "sweet" team!

1. Can you tell us about the moment you first realised you wanted to start your own cake business?

One of my hobbies is baking cakes. Also, I have a skill that not many people can do (building and making 3D figures in a cute way). Then my colleagues and my husband encouraged me to try making a cake incorporated with a 3D figure as a part/element of the themed decoration. I tried to make it and gave several samples to my colleagues. At one point me and my husband realised that there is a big market out there, as such we decided to start this business.

 

2. Starting and running a business can be a wild ride! What challenges have you faced while building your business and how have you overcome them?

There are plenty of challenges that we faced (e.g., customer characteristic, basic equipment that has to be accommodated, council permit, house restructure, etc). The way to overcome the challenges faced is keep going, keep learning from various sources, be better and better, develop some strategies, and set a goal that logically can be reached.

3. What has starting and running your own business meant for you personally?

I have freedom to manage my business brand, foundation, networking, marketing, strategy, etc. I also have freedom to manage my own time so that I can keep focus on my family. Further, I can manage myself to learn more and more from other resources without limitation or hesitation.

4. Can you explain the advantages of incorporating edible images into your cakes?

Incorporating edible images into cakes has advantages. Such as; more design options that we can offer to the customer (no age or decoration theme scope limitation) - on the other hand it also helps us (as a cake maker) to save time towards decorating the cake. There is no limitation to make the cake gorgeous with edible images.

5. We're curious, what design gets your creative juices flowing and why is it your favourite to work on?

The design is just flowing automatically in my mind tbh (of course I am always looking at other cake makers' products to get more and more ideas). I like to make cakes and decorate them, and when my customers are happy with my product-where it also enlivens their party/goal, that feeling is priceless...............I just.............love it.

6. What are some of the latest and greatest trends in the world of edible images you're seeing?

Haven't gone that far but soon will have to look at it. I am at the stage where I design the theme-print-and apply it onto my cake. That's all (for now).

7. Can you share some of your pro tips for printing and applying edible images effectively?

Just make sure you use the frosting icing sheet effectively. Meaning that A4 paper can do several pictures within the frame. Manage it well before printing it. You have to be able to know the weather / room temperature as well, as edible images quality sometimes affected by them.

8. Self-care is crucial! How do you ensure that you're taking care of yourself while also running your business?

My husband mainly manages this business-so yes we are communicating intensely. There are some times I don't take orders-just to take care of myself. However, we do also help people in need (last minute/very last minute order).

10.What career achievement are you most proud of and why does it hold a special place in your heart?

Haven't reached it-but I am on the way to reach it. I am now enjoying this journey.
