Why Did My Edible Ink Printer Print a Blank Page?

Posted by Nicole Tait on 25th Aug 2022

So, you have been happily producing lovely creations with your edible ink printer and then, “bam”, it spits out a blank page! Not ideal, and guaranteed, you’re on a deadline. Never fear, we’ve got your back here, with some great quick-fire troubleshooting tips to get those pages printing pretty again in no time.

Ok, if you have just set up your new edible ink printer or have put new cartridges in your existing edible ink printer - your first port of call is to make sure the yellow tape was removed from the ink cartridge(s) before installing.

Next up, check that you’re not just out of ink! Open up the printer and check the ink cartridges. Look at the ink levels in the ink cartridges, if the sponge free chamber is empty, the cartridges are empty. Trying to print with empty cartridges can damage your printhead.

If the above don’t apply to your situation, move onto these points:

  • Make sure your printer is on a flat, stable surface that extends beyond the base in all directions. The printer won't operate properly if it's tilted or at an angle.
  • Make sure the paper size, orientation, and layout settings in your printer software are correct.
  • Make sure your document does not contain blank pages. If your printer software has a Preview option, you can check for blank pages before you print and remove them, if necessary.

My edible ink printer is still printing a blank page - what else can I do?

  1. Check the error code. The printer may feed the edible icing sheets or paper through without any attempt at printing and then return an error code. This can be looked up in the Canon printer manual, then follow the recommended troubleshooting/advice. We (EIS) always recommend downloading the Canon printer manual for this purpose.
  2. Check the connectivity between the printer and the laptop/computer. Your Wi-Fi may not be strong enough and/or the image size may be too large. Try connecting with a USB cable, or try reducing the image size.
  3. Download the latest printer driver from the Canon website. Ensure you delete the old one first.

TIP: Conducting regular maintenance of your equipment over time reduces the chance of any printing issues (and resulting headaches). Follow our prescribed maintenance schedule to keep you and your printer humming along nicely. (This also happens to be a requirement of your Edible Image Supplies printer warranty)
