Cake Crumbs with Cass Woods from Oh Biscuits
Posted by Nicole Tait on 15th Sep 2025
When Cass Woods launched Oh Biscuits in 2021, it was with the dream of creating a business that could grow alongside her young family, offering the flexibility to raise her three daughters while pursuing a passion for baking. What began as a handful of cookies for friends soon became a thriving small business, fuelled by long nights, determination, and a love for turning biscuits into edible works of art. Earlier this year, Cass took the next big step in growing her business by investing in an edible ink printer, a decision that has opened up new creative possibilities, from custom logo biscuits to personalised designs that truly connect with her clients.
1. Can you tell us about when you first realised you wanted to start your own cookie business?
When I was on maternity leave after having my second daughter in 2020, I knew that if I could start my own business, it would give me the flexibility that I was after so that I could stay at home raising my girls. We were also hopeful to have a third child, which was a good push to start Oh Biscuits, so I could be established before having another baby. I had been baking occasionally for friends and family in the years leading up to then; it felt natural to move into the biscuit business. Oh Biscuits started on September 23rd 2021.
2. Starting and running a business can be a wild ride! What challenges have you faced while building your business and how have you overcome them?
After welcoming our third daughter in September 2022, my maternity leave brought me up to the last week of November. Over a 4-week period, I made 1300 biscuits all at night after my other girls were in bed. When my baby would wake for a feed, my husband Brentley would bring her out to me, I would feed, burp and change her before putting her back into the bassinet, and I would return to the kitchen to keep working. During the day, I was a busy mum with 3 girls (our eldest was attending school as well), coordinating biscuit order pick-ups, keeping on top of the household, looking after a newborn and trying my best to still provide the magic of Christmas. It was a big juggle with not a lot of sleep going on!
3. What has starting and running your own business meant for you?
Running Oh Biscuits has given me the biggest blessing of all, which is having it be possible to be there for my daughters. We walk to and from school together. When they’re sick, I can care for them, I can be there at school events, and I can attend playgroup and activities with them.
To be able to work at night allows me to be present during the day. To be able to support and raise my girls is something that I am extremely grateful for. Every biscuit order that I get makes it possible.
4. You purchased a new edible ink printer earlier this year; what motivated this decision?
Purchasing an Edible Ink Printer has always been on my horizon since starting Oh Biscuits. The only reason I didn’t buy one sooner was due to a lack of time to learn something new. I really wanted to be able to offer printed logo biscuits as an option for my clients.
5. Can you explain the advantages of incorporating edible images into your cookie creations?
Incorporating edible images into my cookie designs has expanded my creativity. I love being able to create edible art, which involves custom images. Being a natural fine detail person, when I’m able to connect a biscuit set to the client with the decorated elements, it really gives me a feeling of achievement and like this is what I should be doing. Food is never just food; food is feelings.
6. We're curious: what design/cookie gets your creative juices flowing, and why is it your favourite to work on?
Any set where my client provides me a theme and says they trust me with the rest is usually my favourite! I understand that my product is a luxury, not a necessity. When a client trusts me to design a set for them, I aim to exceed any expectations that they may have. For these sets, I’ll usually include a lot of extra details and elements to really give it my true style.
If I were to name a specific occasion, it would have to be baby showers as a favourite. Welcoming a child is such a special time; I’m really honoured to be included in special events like these.
7. Have you received any wild or wacky image requests that still make you smile? Do tell!
Not yet! I do have a second business idea in mind, which will attract more of those style orders, haha.
8. Looking back what advice would you give to someone keen to purchase an edible ink printer for the first time?
If you have decided on how you’re going to incorporate printed elements into your business, go for it! If you’re not certain yet, spend some time researching. There are many possibilities that Edible Images can be used for; it’s easier to go in with a direction rather than getting lost wanting to do everything.
If you have someone who can help you, include them where possible. My husband comes from a 23-year print background as his former profession. He now works in IT, which is also very handy! Having him here to set things up, calibrate, troubleshoot and help me produce my design visions is invaluable.
9. Do you have a favourite cookie flavour?
At Oh Biscuits, we only do vanilla sugar cookies and produce gingerbread for Christmas. Having a nice, clean-tasting, buttery but not oily, quality vanilla, biscuit topped with sweet vanilla fondant is very satisfying.
I also like double-coated Tim Tams, haha.
10. Self-care is crucial! How do you take care of yourself while running your business?
Self-care is my focus word for 2025! It’s an area that I find I don’t prioritise. This year, I have started saying no to additional orders when my bookings are full. I had major surgery at the start of the year, which has improved my quality of life immensely. I try to exercise regularly. Thursday mornings, I commit to enjoying playgroup with my toddler. My good friend Dee does my hair every few months, spending 5 hours with her nonstop talking really fills my cup, the good hair is just a bonus.
When working, I really enjoy listening to podcasts. Anything that challenges my brain and makes me grow as a person. I classify that as self-care because I feel as if I am continually wanting to become a better human.
11. What business-related achievement are you most proud of, and why does it hold a special place in your heart?
On my Oh Biscuits Instagram page, we are really close to 1,000 followers. Where we live, Launceston, is a pretty small city. There are a few other at-home biscuit creators around here and bakers who also offer biscuits.
I don’t do sponsored posts, I don’t use hashtags, I don’t do targeted marketing, I don’t pay for any forms of advertising, you won’t find me on community pages or Marketplace spruiking my biscuits. All of my followers are organic, with the majority being word of mouth. I don’t degrade other biscuit bakers, and I make it known that there is room for everyone. I am really proud of producing a product that people like enough to continue to support and to tell their friends about.
