Cake Crumbs - with Kristene from Mummy Bakes Cakes
Each month we feature one of our talented customers and share with you their story and tasty tips. This months feature, Kristene D'Ambros, is fairly new to cake decorating but clearly is very talented at it. Read on....
1. How did your baking journey begin?
I’ve loved baking ever since I was a little girl, both my grandmothers and my mother played a huge role in igniting my passion. I enrolled to do my first cake decorating class – a short 5 week “basic buttercream” course at my local cake decorating centre, that was about 3 years ago.
2. What has starting your own business meant for you?
For me, I still pinch myself that I get to do something that truly ignites my soul whilst getting paid for the privilege! Stuff dreams are made of.
3. As a cake decorator, what do you feel are the benefits of using edible images?
My Edible Image System has been pivotal for me, taking my cakes etc to a whole new level, allowing me to create beautiful vibrant images without the huge time factor involved in making them by hand. This has made a massive impact on how many personalized cakes I’m able to create, I can receive, edit and print an image in a matter of minutes if I need to.
4. What’s your favourite type of design to create?
I’m loving all things buttercream at the moment - I recently made my son’s Sponge Bob themed birthday cake and used edible images along with handmade toppers. Abstract/Concrete buttercream cakes are also very popular right now and I’ve made a few of these as well.
5. What is the current trend you’re seeing in edible images?
This year I’ve seen a lot of ‘photo” or “camera roll” cakes, mostly black & white photos. I’ve not personally created one but I’ve printed images for at least 2-3 customers just this year alone who were planning on using this technique.
6. What is the funniest/most unusual image you’ve been asked to create?
Nothing really unusual yet - pretty stock standard -Paw Patrol, Peppa Pig, Lightning McQueen images. I’m sure it will happen eventually!
7. Do you have any tips you can share when either printing or applying edible images?
I find it best to print a “proof” on my standard printer so I can make certain it’s the exact sizing etc I need, saves incorrect printing and a wasted icing sheet.
8. What is your career highlight to date?
My career highlight would have to be a Roald Dahl themed cake, complete with a Big Friendly Giant printed image. Had so much fun making that.
