Cake Crumbs with Tamara Mulholland From Bake and Plate Co

Posted by Nicole Tait on 12th Aug 2022

Itching to start a business together with a friend, Tamara Mulholland launched Bake And Plate Co. She has since taken the business on in full herself, continuing to produce beautiful custom made cookies whilst juggling the myriad of other things life offers up (including another business).

1. How did your sweets business or journey begin?

My journey started with one of my best friends back in 2019. We where both stay at home mums and decided we wanted to do something together and that’s when Bake and Plate Co came to life. I’ve since taken it over by myself.

2. What has starting your own business meant for you?

It’s been very rewarding. I love spending time in the kitchen so it’s not work to me. I love it.

3. What have been/are the biggest challenges you face(d) in regard to starting/building/maintaining your business?

Running any business is hard and has its challenges but I guess for me it was the social media side of things. All the marketing and promoting to gain followers who hopefully turn into paying customers. Since Covid baking businesses have soared so it’s become very competitive.

4. What do you feel are the benefits of using edible images?

It’s been a game changer. I love the fact that you can print anything that clients require. The photo images on cookies have been a huge hit.

5. What is your favourite type of treat/design to create?

As mentioned above, photo images for clients has been our most trending thing at the moment.

6. What is the current trend you’re seeing in edible images?

Photo images are definitely on trend as well as Business logos for corporate gifts or events.

7. What is the funniest/most unusual sweet creation you’ve been asked to make?

I’m yet to have a request for anything out of the norm or quirky but I’m definitely up to the challenge should it ever arise.

8. Do you have any tips you can share when either printing or applying edible images?

Wouldn’t say it’s a tip but I’d highly recommend purchasing an edible printer. It will certainly allow you to get creative and saves you time also.

9. What is your “can’t live without” sweet making tool?

Cannot live without my Kitchen Aid mixer. I’ve used a few other brand mixers in my day but this one is the ducks nuts. Love, love, love.

10. What do you do for yourself within your life and business to help avoid or alleviate burnout?

Between Bake and Plate Co, running after my 5 year old daughter and also running a Gift Hamper business named Lily Drops, in my down time I enjoy walking, cooking for my family, catching up with friends and watching a good movie. I’m also in the early stages of building our dream home which will showcase my gorgeous butlers pantry. Cannot wait to create all my Bake and Plate Co cookies in there.

11. What is your career highlight to date?

Career highlight would be doing pay it forward cookies for businesses whilst in lockdown. I just wanted to say a huge thank you, especially to all the essential staff in hospitals. Wasn’t paid, just did it from the goodness of my own heart.

12. Are there any other EIS products you enjoy using on a regular basis?

I haven’t used a lot of products but I’d say I’ve enjoyed using the icing sheets and the creative program online (Icing Artist).
