Mastering Edible Wafer Paper: Tips and Tricks for Success

Mastering Edible Wafer Paper: Tips and Tricks for Success

Posted by Nicole Tait on 6th Dec 2024

At Edible Image Supplies, we love helping our customers create stunning edible art, and edible wafer paper is one of their favourite mediums! Whether a beginner or an experienced baker, getting the best results with edible wafer paper requires a little knowledge and preparation. In this guide, we’ll cover essential storage tips, techniques for handling wafer paper, and tricks for colouring and working with this versatile product.

The Secret to Perfect Edible Wafer Paper: Proper Storage

Edible Wafer paper is a delicate and dry product, so proper storage is critical to keeping it in optimal condition. Here’s how to store it:

  1. Use a Plastic Container:
A simple, airtight plastic crafting box works wonders. Edible Wafer paper left exposed to air will quickly lose its flexibility and become brittle.
  2. Check Hydration with the "Snap Test":
Fold a corner of the edible wafer paper. If it makes a snapping sound, it’s too dry and may break or tear during use. Properly hydrated wafer paper should bend and twist without cracking.
  3. Maintain Humidity with Sponges:
    • Place a clean, unused kitchen sponge in a small ziplock bag with a bit of distilled water (never tap water, as it can introduce impurities).
    • Ensure the sponge is damp but not dripping. Open the bag slightly and place it inside your storage container.
    • This setup creates a gentle, controlled humidity that keeps your edible wafer paper flexible and easy to work with.

4. Double-Bag for Extra Protection:

Transfer it, still in the original bag, to a larger ziplock bag for extra protection, ensuring it stays fresh and hydrated.

Working with Edible Wafer Paper Scraps: Waste Not, Want Not

Don’t throw away your edible wafer paper scraps! Even the smallest pieces can be useful:

  • Store Cut-Outs: After punching or cutting shapes, save the extras in small ziplock bags. They’ll come in handy for future projects.

TIP: "Keep all your little scraps of edible wafer paper! I mix them with water to create a glue-like paste, which I use to adhere wafer paper designs together." - Laura Cerra, Cakes By Laura.

Handling Edible Wafer Paper: Dos and Don’ts

DO:

  • Use a small spray bottle for applying moisture. Spraying a fine mist of water or alcohol (e.g., vodka) ensures even coverage.
  • Test the spray first away from your edible wafer paper to avoid large droplets that can cause uneven spots or dissolving.
  • Keep your work surface dry and free from excess moisture.

DON’T:

  • Don’t spray directly onto your edible wafer paper without testing—large water droplets can quickly dissolve it.
  • Avoid applying too much piping gel or glue, as excess moisture will cause the paper to break down.

Colouring Edible Wafer Paper: Tips for Even Coverage

  1. Using Powdered Colours:
    • Dip your brush into the powder and tap off the excess.
    • Start from the edge of the edible wafer paper and brush inward with long, even strokes. This method helps avoid uneven patches or colour buildup.
  1. Airbrushing for Large Projects:
Airbrushing is ideal for achieving smooth, even colour across large sections of edible wafer paper. Apply thin layers, allowing each to dry before adding more. This prevents over-saturation and maintains the paper’s integrity.

Troubleshooting Common Edible Wafer Paper Issues

  • Brittle Paper:
If your edible wafer paper is too dry, it will snap and break. Increase the humidity in your storage container with a damp sponge or lightly mist the paper before use.
  • Soggy or Disintegrating Paper:
Too much moisture is the enemy! If your paper becomes too wet, it will dissolve like tissue paper. Always use minimal amounts of water, piping gel, or alcohol.
