Cake Crumbs with Jodie Brown From Skye's The Limit Cakes

Posted by Nicole Tait on 31st Jul 2026

Jodie Brown from Skye's The Limit Cakes has always loved creating sweet treats. After years as a chef and time out to raise a family, she took the leap into running her own cake business. And she's never looked back.

1. Can you tell us about when you first realised you wanted to start your sweet treats business?

Growing up, I always wanted to bake and create desserts. After 10+ years working as a chef, I became a Stay-at-home mum, so when my son started school, I decided that I wanted to give it the best shot I could and 3 years later I'm so glad I took the chance.

2. Starting and running a business can be a wild ride! What challenges have you faced while building your business, and how have you overcome them?

The biggest challenges would have to be getting my name out there.

Unfortunately, I don't currently have a webpage, just Facebook and Instagram, so working from word of mouth and utilising the free noticeboards on Facebook have definitely helped.

3. What has starting and running your own business meant for you?

Absolutely everything! Being able to work at my own pace and hours means I can spend more time with the family.

4. You recently purchased an edible ink printer; what motivated this decision?

Having to rely on the local cake store to be able to print my images, hoping I ordered the right sizes before creating the cakes, and the wait times for them can be very stressful. Owning my own printer has helped by removing that worry.

5. Can you explain the advantages of incorporating edible images into your sweet creations?

Edible Images bring the theme across.

6. We're curious: what design gets your creative juices flowing, and why is it your favourite to work on?

Sculpted cakes. I love the challenge. Making sure you get all the details right just makes the cake come to life.

7. Have you received any wild or wacky image requests that still make you smile? Do tell!

Hahaha. Yes!

I was asked to create a Minion-themed cake, although they also had a favourite K-pop star they wanted incorporated. So of course, the K-pop star had to be Gru and the girls.

8. Looking back, what advice would you give to someone keen to purchase an edible ink printer for the first time?

100% Do it!

It will save you money in the long run, easy to purchase edible icing sheets and edible ink through Edible Image Supplies, and you can print to the sizes you need at the time rather than trying to work out your sizing prior to when they are needed.

9. Do you have a favourite cake flavour?

Chocolate Mudcake is my absolute go-to!! I'm a massive Chocoholic!

10. Self-care is crucial! How do you take care of yourself while running your business?

Making sure I only respond during my work hours so I can have quality time with my family.

11. What business-related achievement are you most proud of, and why does it hold a special place in your heart?

Becoming a Finalist in the Local Business Awards two years straight! 2024/2025

I am still in shock that I was able to make it to a finalist with all the other amazing bakers.

12. Are there any other EIS products that you love using in your work?

I love my Icing Cutter Pro! It gives me the perfect circles every time for my cupcake and cookie toppers! Whenever I used to cut them by hand, they would come out wonky.
