How Much Edible Ink Does It Take to Print 14,000 Edible Paint Palettes?

Short answer: A lot. But probably less than you'd think.
Suzanne Ellul from The Cookie Spot recently tackled an absolutely massive project: 14,000 edible paint-your-own cookie packs.

Let that sink in. That required:

  • 42,000 cookies
  • 28,000 tubs of sprinkles
  • 28,000 icing bags with royal icing
  • 14,000 edible paint palettes and brushes
For the number lovers: That's approximately 70 packs of edible icing sheets totalling 1,750 A4 sheets of edible icing (8 palettes per sheet) used.
So yes, we had to ask: how much edible ink actually goes into something that big?
Here's what Suzanne told us:
"It's hard to pinpoint exactly how much. I went through 3, maybe 4 sets of cartridges and 1 to 2 refill bottles (not the black cartridges). But I was also printing other work at the same time, so it's hard to say. Oh, and I had a printer malfunction - although I think it was a user malfunction! You guys sent me a new printer, which I'm starting to love now, by the way. I did rescue my old printer, though."
What We Love About This:
Suzanne's honesty. Running a big cookie business isn't a perfectly controlled lab. You're printing 14,000 palettes, baking 42,000 cookies, AND doing other work. Sometimes your printer hiccups (or you do). And yes, sometimes you end up with two printers because you just can't let go of the old one.
But here's the real takeaway: producing thousands of edible prints doesn't require an endless supply of ink. Suzanne managed 14,000 palettes with 3-4 edible ink cartridge sets and a couple of edible ink refill bottles while juggling other orders. That's efficient production!
If you're thinking about scaling up your edible printing or tackling a big project, this is proof you can do it. And if something goes wrong along the way? That's just part of the journey.
We're so glad you're loving your new edible ink printer, Suzanne. And hey, now you've got a backup just in case!
