900 Edible Wafer Paper Circles Later... This Stunning Cake Was Worth Every Minute

900 Edible Wafer Paper Circles Later... This Stunning Cake Was Worth Every Minute

Posted by Tanya Montgomery on 22nd Jul 2026

At Edible Image Supplies, we're regularly stopped in our tracks by the incredible creations our customers bring to life. The talent, creativity, and skill we see never gets old. This elegant 40th birthday cake is no exception - it blew us away!

Created by our very talented customer, Kristene D'Ambros from Mummy Bakes Cakes - the finished design looks effortlessly delicate. But behind those beautiful edible wafer paper ruffles was a lot more work than you might imagine.

When her long-term client first sent through the inspiration photo, her initial reaction was...

"Oh hell no!"

Although she'd used edible wafer paper before, she hadn't attempted anything on this scale. After a little encouragement from her client, she decided to spend a weekend experimenting to see if it was even possible.

To her surprise, the technique itself wasn't difficult.

The challenge?

The sheer amount of preparation.

The Reality Behind the Design

To create the finished cake, she ordered 50 sheets of Edible Image Supplies edible wafer paper, eventually using 45 sheets.

Those sheets became:

900 individual 5cm edible wafer paper circles.

Yes... 900!

Using a hole punch, she was able to cut three sheets at a time, which made the cutting process surprisingly manageable.

The real labour came afterwards.

Every single circle then had to be folded, shaped and attached by hand.

She estimates the preparation alone took at least six to seven hours - and that was before she even started baking the cake.

The Part We Don't Always See

Like many decorators, Kristene admitted she questioned whether she'd charged enough for the project.

It's something so many cake artists struggle with.

When clients see a beautiful finished cake, they often don't see the hours of preparation, experimentation and hand-crafted detail that go into creating it.

Projects like this are a great reminder that pricing isn't just about ingredients - it's about skill, creativity and time.

Was It Worth It?

Absolutely.

The finished cake was everything the client had hoped for.

Delicate, modern and beautifully textured.

And perhaps just as importantly, Kristene walked away with a little more confidence in valuing her own work.

When we asked if she'd make it again, her answer was simple:

"Absolutely."

Would she charge the same price?

"Absolutely 100%... and with much more confidence."

Thinking of Trying Edible Wafer Paper?

This cake is a wonderful example of just how versatile edible wafer paper can be.

Whether you're creating delicate flowers, textured sails, modern ruffles or intricate sculptural designs, edible wafer paper offers endless creative possibilities.

Sometimes the biggest challenge isn't learning the technique...

It's believing you can do it.

Congratulations on an incredible cake, Kristene, and thank you for allowing us to share your story with our community.
