Cake Crumbs with Kylene Lovat from Smashcake

Cake Crumbs with Kylene Lovat from Smashcake

22nd Feb 2022

Each month we feature one of our talented customers and share with you their story and tasty tips. This month our featured customer creates cakes of a different kind. Kylene from Smashcake, designs and produces wonderfully fun chocolate pinata smashcakes, chockers full of scrumptious lollies. In the famous words of Veruca Salt, we say, "give it to me now!".

1. How did your smashcake journey begin?

Smashcake came to life in 2009 when a friend gifted me with a chocolate box filled with lollies. I loved this idea so much & thought that it would be super cool to design smash-able chocolate piñatas that actually looked like real cakes! I’d been making chocolates since age 10 & set up my first chocolate business at age 20 but had always been searching for an idea that was unique & quirky. I opened up my Smashcake online stores in 2010 & have been making them ever since!

2. What has starting your own business meant for you?

Starting my own business has given me the flexibility to work around my children & has also enabled me to go to “work” every day & do something that I love & I’m incredibly passionate about. These things are priceless.

3. What do you feel are the benefits of using edible images?

Using edible imagery has opened up a world of creative design options & I love this!

4. What’s your favourite type of design to create?

My favourite Smashcake designs are the ones where my clients give me total creative freedom. I always manage to create my best designs when the creativity flows freely.

5. What is the current trend you’re seeing in edible images?

I’ve seen a big trend with corporates using their logos made with edible imagery for press releases/ product launches/ brand announcements.

6. What is the funniest/most unusual smashcake you’ve been asked to create?

The funniest Smashcake I’ve made is an Outback Dunny for an apprentice plumbers birthday. It was a very graphic “chocolate” creation....

7. Do you have any tips you can share when either printing or applying edible images?

My tip when using edible images is to make sure that you apply them fresh & not too far in advance. The weather (particularly humidity) can be a problem if they’re left to sit.

8. What is your career highlight to date?

It’s hard to choose one highlight but making a Smashcake for Darrel Lea’s 90th Birthday last year was pretty special (I’m a huge fan & grew up with their treats).

I created a Chupa Chups Smashcake this week for their 60th Birthday celebrations- I was pretty chuffed to be asked to do this one :)
