Cake Crumbs with Shirine Somsom from Sugar Sweet Randomz
22nd Feb 2022
Each month we feature one of our talented customers and share with you their story and tasty tips. Our featured caker this month specialises in smaller party treats, all beautifully presented and incredibly enticing. Shirine from Sugar Sweet Ramdomz openly admits to being a tad obsessed with "cake pops". We reckon her clients are pretty happy about this too. Shirine uses edible images to decorate her cake pops, cookies, she also sells custom images direct to her customers.
1. How did your cake/sweets/business journey begin?
Everytime I get asked this question I have a little laugh because I never thought I would ever have a sweet business journey. Its something that has never crossed my mind nor did I ever think that baking would be a hobby that I would enjoy.
I have a degree in science and when I graduated, my career goal was to work for a reputable company and work my way up from there.
It wasn’t until about 8 years ago when I attended my friends baby shower that I noticed how gorgeous her dessert table set up was and then these little cute round detailed cake balls on a stick had caught my eye. From then I had discovered the world of Cake Pops and from that day forward it meant endless YouTube videos, pinterst searches etc.
I started Sugar Sweet Randomz in 2015 when I left my full time job to focus on being a mum and my new sweets adventure.
2. What has starting your own business meant for you?
Starting my own business meant a lot for me. When I fell pregnant with my first child, I knew that my work life would get in the way of being a mum so I wanted to do something which is still for me but at the same time be flexible and always there for my children.
3. What do you feel are the benefits of using edible images?
Edible Images honestly has been one of the best creations. I love how it gives cakes, cupcakes, cookies & cakepop’s that personal sweet touch from putting photos of weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, you name it. The look on customers face when they see their image on the dessert is fantastic.
Another benefit is that it sure has saved some cake decorators lots of time. An example is when I have had cake decorators asking me to print “Happy Birthday Name & Date” because they don’t have time to do it with fondant or they need it in some fancy font.
4. What’s your favourite type of treat/design to create?
I LOVE CAKE POPS. I love eating them, I love making them, I love looking at endless cake pop creations on the internet & I love it when I get a challenge on a particular design.
5. What is the current trend you’re seeing in edible images?
I am seeing a lot of corporate logos and popular children's theme birthdays like Superheroes, My little Pony, Unicorns & Paw Patrol.
There are so many trends at the moment. I just feel that every year it's always being taken to the next level.
6. What is the funniest/most unusual creation you’ve been asked to make?
I haven’t actually made any unusual or funny creations but I do remember once getting asked for a horror theme cake pops which I found weird.
7. Do you have any tips you can share when either printing or applying edible images?
I would definitely say don’t print too far in advance, especially in summer time & always store in a cool dry place.
Personally, I found using piping gel would stick the image far better than water.
8. What is your career highlight to date?
WOW where do I start. I feel I have had quite a few but to narrow it down I would definitely say the look on my kids and nieces and nephews faces when I have made cake pops, cupcakes and cookies for them. Especially when they see their own picture on the sweet treats.
Another highlight was in June this year when the talented and wonderful Doumuoa Howcher from Dom’s Strawberries Delights had contacted me with an opportunity to collaborate with 4 other incredible vendors to make a one stop shop for all dessert catering needs. Along with Dom’s Strawberries Delights, Nada’s Cookie Jar, Cupful Creations and Sugarlicious Cakes Sydney, The Sweet Event Co was established.
